Google Has Caught Apple Napping

Google has beat Apple at its own Retina-display-thumping game. Meet the Nexus 7, the eye-popping 323-pixels-per-inch wonder.

It is, in a way, the (rumored) iPad Mini Retina wrapped in Android 4.3.

Here's the deal: If you can find most of the apps you need on Google's Play Store and would like a small tablet with the highest resolution display on any tablet to date (i.e., higher than the 9.7-inch Retina iPad and way higher than the iPad Mini), then the second-generation Nexus 7 may be a good choice.

How did this happen? Well, Google, Asus (the device manufacturer), and Japan Display Inc. (the display maker) have managed, for the first time, to slap a smartphone-density display on a small tablet.

Apple Wins Best Tablet, Mobile Phone, and Computer Brand Of The Year. Again. | Cult of Mac

Market research firm Harris Interactive conducts a fairly extensive poll each year in the area of consumer electronic brands. This year, Apple again took the top spot in three major categories, named the best brand of tablet, computer, and mobile phone. The iPad, Mac, and iPhone scored the best across an array of specific brand markers, like brand recognition, emotional response to the brand, and purchasing consideration.
The survey measured the perceptions of over 38,500 US consumers across more than 1,500 brands in over 155 categories. Whew. Apple blew past the competition, which included HP, Dell, and Sony in the computer category, as well as Google and Samsung in the tablet category. Apple also won the top brand spot over HTC, Samsung, and LG in the mobile phone category.

The Display On Google's New Nexus 7 Tablet Crushes The iPad Mini - Cult of Mac

Today Google unveiled its second-gen Nexus 7 tablet. The 7-inch, ASUS-made device packs a stunning 1,920 x 1,200 display. That translates to 323 pixels per inch, which is up considerably from the first Nexus 7’s 216 ppi. It’s also a higher resolution display than what Apple offers with the iPad mini, the company’s only flagship product that hasn’t been Retina-fied yet.
Google is right when it says that it has the “world’s highest-resolution 7-inch tablet.” The first Nexus 7 beat the iPad mini’s display quality too. So will Apple finally answer with a Retina iPad mini this fall?
The human eye stops being able to distinguish individual pixels around 300 ppi, and getting that high quality of a display into such a small factor has proven to be difficult for Apple. Google worked wonders with Japan Display to make the new Nexus 7 possible, and DisplaySearch told AllThingsD that “volume shipments of such a device [Retina iPad mini] won’t come until the first few months of next year because of the challenges of producing such a display.”

Humbled Apple Admits Hacking After Releasing Removal Tool - Yahoo! Small Business Advisor

In Defense of Apple
No reader should think Apple is now a bad bet in software or hardware. Far from it. The software is still intuitive, speedy and easy-to-use. For all genres of media, it remains the standard and no hacking will change that anytime soon. The quality of the hardware is legendary and, of all devices available, holds its value better than any competitor. Just zip to eBay and auction a Zune from 2005 and an iPod from 2005, and see which gets the better price. Apple still defines quality.
But the ever-increasing skill of cybercriminals and our reliance on digital commerce make computer security essential now more than ever. Owning an Apple doesn’t mean being impervious to the viruses that plague PCs.  No matter how respected Apple is, being the best doesn’t mean being invincible. Even Superman had kryptonite.

(CNN) -- New York mayoral candidate and former congressman Anthony Weiner said Tuesday that some sexually explicit online chats that were published by a gossip website happened after his resignation from Congress in 2011.

Cameron also announced a ban on possessing online porn depicting rape — bringing England and Wales in line with Scotland's rules on the matter.

The Apple Phablet Rumor Just Got Real - Rebecca Greenfield - The Atlantic Wire

Going against Apple's previous touchscreen strategy, the rumormongers insist that Apple is looking to bring bigger screens to both the iPhone and the iPad, essentially following Samsung by peddling an assortment of screen-sizes for its products. This phablet and giant-tablet rumor first popped up in June, when it sounded as believable as every Apple rumor. (Not very.) When Apple bumped its iPhone up to 4 inches, CEO Tim Cook pretty much put the kibosh on ever going any bigger. "It [the iPhone 5] also provides a larger screen size without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use that our customers love," he has before said. But, today, The Wall Street Journal has sources again saying Apple might go bigger. "In recent months, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally," sources told the Journal's Lorraine Luk.
