Samsung Galaxy View Review: I Love This Magical Slab of Content

I love movies. I first watched Annie Hall on my phone. I fill my tablet with movies and watch them on planes. I still watch movies on my laptop, even when there’s an actual television just a few feet away. This is why the Samsung Galaxy View feels so terribly intriguing.

At first, I didn’t know what to think about a massive TV-tablet hybrid device. You can carrying it around like a suitcase. You can use it like a humongous Android computer. And—most importantly—you can watch live television on the thing. A week ago, I’d never held anything like the Galaxy View. Now, I never want to stop using it. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun.

Samsung Pay also communicates with NFC readers, so the strips aren't the only way it can function. Once you enter and verify your card data in the app, Samsung Pay generates a new virtual card to keep your financial data secure. As you make a purchase, your phone emits a magnetic secure transmission, and the card reader will think you just swiped that virtual card. But there's no need to actually swipe. Just hold your phone close to the terminal. If you check out your receipt, you'll see that the last four card digits listedaren't the same as your actual card.

This is a fantastic innovation that solves the single largest problem facing mobile-payment systems: you just can't expect most retailers to have NFC readers. Big chains like McDonalds and Walgreens have been pretty good about upgrading most of their locations, and the technology will surely spread as time goes on. But right now there are countless smaller establishments that only accept cards or cash. You don't need to worry about those discouraging hurdles when using Samsung Pay. It even works with mobile, external card readers like Square."

We had high hopes when we first heard of Microsoft's hybrid Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 convertible notebooks. Unfortunately, we (as well as early adopters) encountered a variety of bugs in these machines. Last Friday (Dec. 11), the company issued an apology for the performance issues beleaguering these products.

Conclusion

With the 32GB Wi-Fi only version costing £399 direct from Samsung, the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 is priced on a par with the 16GB 9.7-inch iPad Air 2. It has the same screen resolution in a lighter and thinner package, and of course more storage, so it’s clear to see what the target is here. The Samsung offers good performance in everyday use and is likely to deliver better battery life than the iPad as well.

Features like the ability to use KNOX and the inclusion of Microsoft Office make it an attractive option for enterprise users. The plastic back panel doesn’t detract too much from the quality feel of the device, and obviously it contributes to the Galaxy Tab’s light weight. The cameras are good by tablet standards and it isn’t overloaded with bloatware.

Overall Samsung has delivered a well thought out package with this device and if you were thinking of buying an iPad Air 2 it’s well worth considering the Galaxy Tab S2 as an alternative. It offers you more for your money, good performance and you won’t find yourself feeling that you’ve ended up with second best.
